Just before leaving an IEP meeting recently, I discovered a comic strip posting on the board in the meeting room that was also the "Direct Study" aka "Special Education" classroom that students currently utilize. Posted was the following:
Your son shot his teacher, escaped in a stolen car, ran a blockade, took hostages, burned down an orphanage and wounded three officers in a shootout! The mother's response: Yes, but…he's ADHD and has an IEP!--This is an example of how sometimes unfortunate details can work in your favor. As this post helped me win this case. This "joke" was not funny, it did however backfire on school personnel severing as burden-of-proof that (aside from being noncompliant) Special Education school team members did not keep the needs of the student in mind. Furthermore, it exemplified the lack of respect this school had for students with disabilities.
